Brow Powder or Pencil for My Brows?

Should I use a powder or pencil for my brows?

Should I use a Brow powder or pencil for my brows?  This is a very common question I get asked by my clients.

It’s so common that I’m dedicating an entire blog post just to answer it. For this post’s sake, I will not talk about Dip Brows even though they are a great option.

I want to keep this to the point. The brief overview here is that there is no black/ white answer to using either brow powders or pencils for your brows.  It’s really up to your natural hair growth. It also relies on your personal preferences.

I usually recommend using a mix of both.

Are you still curious to know more? Take a look at the detailed reasons why I recommend brow powders and brow pencils to my clients:

Better for Coverage

If you have sparse brows, brow powders and pencils are going to be your best friends. They can give you fuller, thicker brows in minutes. As a general rule of thumb, whether or not you should apply powders or pencils is a question you need to answer based on the following scenarios:

  • If your brows have bald spots, you should use brow pencils because you don’t have any hair to support the powder pigment.
  • Brow powders are more natural looking on brows but only if your brows have some hair. Even translucent hairs are good enough to apply powder.

Use them interchangeably, as needed, to get the best and most natural results for your brows.

Perfect for NYC Summers

A favorite I have seen among my clients and the recommendations of other artists is the use of tinted brow gels. I might be going against the trend here but I don’t believe in using tinted brow gels to fill in your brows. Tinted brow gels are meant to color your brow hair, not for coverage or volume.

So, if you have thin, sparse brows, filling them in with a tinted brow gel on your skin, is not a good idea. Try using tinted brow gels during a NY summer humid day for a few hours and see if it doesn’t run.

With brow pencils and powders, on the other hand, you will not face this issue at all.

Gives the Most Natural Look

You can still achieve a natural look using a brow pencil and powder combination. It’s always nice to have natural looking brows because you don’t want to look like you’ve literally drawn them on your face.

Powders add a touch of softness, pigment, and depth whereas brow pencils add some definition and much-needed body. When used together, your brows will have the right amount of emphasis and natural appeal.

Perfect for the Women on the Go!

I and most of the brow artists generally use more than one product on brows to add dimension and depth. Personally, I prefer to use a minimum of 3 products. But that’s not always possible for busy, working women or the moms out there.

When you don’t have much time to spend on your brows, it can be difficult to know what to use. In such scenarios, I think using pencils and brow powders will definitely help to give you the best results, without eating into your limited time.

My Personal Tip for Using Pencils and Powders

Now we already know that I like both pencils and powders. So I would recommend them both. So, to add something new here, I’m going to give you my personal tip for using powders and pencils.

If you’re using either for your brows, you should always use a brow highlighter for definition. This softens the look and you will not look like you got too heavy handed with your brow products!
